Aged GENSHE Fu Tea brick wrapped in traditional paper beside an unglazed Yixing clay jar on a dark wooden shelf — proper storage for a living treasure

How to Store Aged Fu Tea: Preserving Your Living Treasure

Storage Is Where Aging Happens

An aged Fu Tea brick is not a finished product — it is a living artifact, still evolving long after it leaves the master's hands. How you store it determines whether it continues to improve or begins to decline. The good news: Fu Tea is remarkably forgiving. The principles are simple, and the rewards of proper storage are profound.

The Four Enemies of Aged Fu Tea

Before understanding what to do, understand what to avoid:

  • Moisture and humidity: Excess humidity encourages harmful mold growth that can ruin a brick. Persistent dampness produces musty, sour notes that no amount of airing can fully reverse.
  • Strong odors: Fu Tea is highly absorbent. Store it near coffee, spices, perfume, or cleaning products and it will absorb those aromas permanently. Once contaminated, the tea cannot be restored.
  • Direct sunlight: UV exposure degrades the beneficial compounds in Fu Tea and can alter its flavor profile. Always store away from windows and direct light.
  • Sealed airtight containers: Unlike green or white teas, Fu Tea needs to breathe. Sealing it airtight halts the aging process and can trap unwanted moisture.

Ideal Storage Conditions

  • Temperature: 15–25°C (59–77°F). Avoid extreme heat or cold. Consistent temperature is more important than the exact number.
  • Humidity: 50–70% relative humidity. Too dry and the aging slows; too humid and harmful mold can develop.
  • Ventilation: Good airflow is essential. A well-ventilated room or cabinet — not a sealed box — is ideal.
  • Darkness: A cool, dark cupboard, shelf, or dedicated tea storage cabinet away from direct light.

Best Storage Vessels

The vessel matters as much as the environment:

  • Unglazed clay jar (recommended): The most traditional and effective option. Unglazed clay is breathable, regulates humidity naturally, and does not impart any flavor. Yixing or other unglazed pottery is ideal.
  • Breathable paper wrapping: The original wrapping that comes with your GENSHE Fu Tea brick is designed for this purpose. Keep it intact when not in use.
  • Bamboo or wooden box (unsealed): A natural, breathable option that also protects the brick from physical damage. Avoid lacquered or chemically treated wood.
  • Avoid: Plastic bags, airtight tins, or any container that prevents airflow.

Storing a Broken Brick

Once you have broken into a brick for brewing, the exposed surface begins to interact more actively with its environment. A few additional considerations:

  • Store broken pieces in an unglazed clay jar or wrap loosely in the original paper.
  • Do not mix pieces from different bricks or different vintages — each brick has its own aging trajectory.
  • If the broken surface develops a light white bloom, this is often normal secondary fermentation. Air the pieces for 24–48 hours before brewing.

Long-Term Aging: The 10-Year Horizon

If you are storing a GENSHE Fu Tea brick as a long-term investment or collector's piece, the same principles apply — but consistency becomes even more critical over years and decades.

Many serious collectors dedicate a specific room or cabinet to aged tea storage, maintaining stable temperature and humidity year-round. In the Middle East's drier climates, a small humidifier in the storage space can help maintain optimal conditions.

A brick stored correctly for 10 additional years will be measurably more complex, more mellow, and more valuable than when you acquired it. This is the promise of aged Fu Tea: time, properly managed, is the final ingredient.

A Note on Airing New Bricks

When you first receive a GENSHE Fu Tea brick, allow it to air in a clean, odor-free environment for 24–48 hours before storing or brewing. This allows any residual compression aromas to dissipate and lets the brick settle into its new environment.

After airing, wrap loosely in the original paper and place in your chosen storage vessel. Your brick is now ready to continue its journey.
